One of the most important values I uphold is a sense of recognizing my identity. As a Filipino citizen, my upbringing has been greatly centered around the cultures and values that Filipinos live by, including our warm hospitality towards our guests, constant show of respect towards our elderly (with the use of the polite words po and opo), and the mano culture we Filipinos show towards elders. Even if I live abroad, I never forget who I am as a Filipino.
Growing up in a Philippine school setting, it is customary for us students to celebrate many school events. If you've ever been to or studied at a Filipino school you can definitely relate to the culture of celebrating many events almost every month of the school year. These events not only allowed us to celebrate events that matter to us Philippine school students but also gave us a way to unwind and step back from the workload we often get accustomed to do at school.
Because August has arrived, I decided to participate in this celebration. As a way to reminisce our childhood love of listening to our parents' and elders' stories I will post book reviews on 5 Filipino children's books, one every day, from the 25th to the 30th of this month. I will write down the reviews in both Filipino and English to cater to both Filipino and non-Filipino audiences. What I intend to achieve with this commemorative celebration is to spread the beauty of the Filipino language to Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike, ignite an appreciation for Filipino storytelling and sense of culture, and to inspire my fellow Filipino frontliners who are tirelessly working to put an end to the current pandemic to enjoy their cultural identity and roots (for they are the main focus of this year's Buwan ng Wika theme).
HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE
An integral part of Filipino culture is bayanihan, which is closely related to the word camaraderie in English. By reading the book reviews I'll do you've already played a part in supporting the cause. Imagine how much more if we can spread the word to more people! Then, we can definitely spread the love for the Filipino language together!
This is why I invite you not only to read the book reviews I'll be posting then, but also spread the word about these book reviews. The bayanihan culture we can cultivate together with this shall not only help us Filipinos to preserve our language but also spread our love for the stories we share.
And that's it! I look forward to seeing you in my special book reviews. Hiraya manawari! (May all the desires of your heart come true!)
